Isn't it wonderful to have such responsive government that will take care of all of your needs and desires at the snap of a presidential finger?
From Julio - Proud and eloquent example of our American Education system:
To Henrietta Hughes - House handout recipient - (Obama told his staff to talk to her - she subsequently got an offer to move into a State Representative's house (R) - who just happened to have a spare house laying around).
See what happens when you press the White House "Easy Button"!
Now, I understand people have "urgent needs" - but honestly, is government really responsible for fixing everyone's problems? What about Family? Community? or even Self?
I wonder if Peggy Joseph has had Obama pay for her gas and her mortgage yet?
What has America come to that it's citizens are unable to care for themselves? That they expect government to give them everything from college educations to their own bathroom and kitchen.
This is NOT the America that our Founders intentioned. We have come so far away from the values of Thomas Jefferson's time, and even those of American pioneers and many European immigrants who came to carve out a life for themselves in this country. These were Americans who valued self-reliance, intelligence, honesty, and hard work.
Don't get me wrong, as I am sympathetic to the hardships that people face. No one knows what the future holds for any of us - and we could each end up homeless etc., but do we really need government to solve our problems for us? Should we expect government to do that?
Also, with all of the government agencies, funded and already in place to "help people", why is it that someone like Ms. Hughes was not helped until she came out at a public meeting and made to pretty much humiliate herself in front of her President and all of America? Begging is not a pretty endeavor. One has to wonder if established government agencies could not help Ms. Hughes, then what on earth will we be staring at when Universal Healthcare is thrust upon us?
But I digress....
I have heard it said that we are the most generous nation on the planet. There are all sorts of private agencies that help people in need. People DO step up to help members in their community during difficult times. We saw that with the person who is offering her house to Ms. Hughes, and the people who are giving job offers to Julio. Aside from that, there is so much that people can do for themselves to prevent them from getting into difficult situations to begin with. You save money for a rainy day - you get various forms of insurance, you make provisions for the future and you figure out some sort of life strategies. You make sure you get a decent education so that you can make a decent living.
Where is the notion of self-reliance?
Perhaps people ought to realize that their problems might be because government has prevented them from realizing their dreams! That government has taken away their wages through taxation, has provided substandard education, has provided every opportunity for dependency and has reinforced that dependency.
if they can prevent the government
from wasting the labors of the people
under the pretense of taking care of them."
- Thomas Jefferson
It looks as if Government has become "my brother's keeper" in more ways than one. The question is - is that government's function?
Another question begs to be asked... since Obama is busy 'giving out stuff' - why hasn't he helped members of his own family that live in poverty? (Aunt Zeituni Onyango and George Hussein Onyango Obama ) - oh right - it's because it isn't his money he is giving away.
Interestingly enough - one has to also wonder if these "hardship cases" at these Town Hall meetings weren't somehow staged by the Obama camp. It wouldn't surprise me. It obviously makes for good theatrical politics. It is however, a very sad statement regarding what Americans have been reduced to.
