See What Socialist Democrat Policies Have Produced

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and is a major port city on the Detroit River. It used to be a thriving and vibrant place. Now, they cannot even pay to bury their dead. The city's 22.8% unemployment rate (probably higher now) is among the highest in the U.S. and 30% of residents are on food stamps.

Detroit has been run by Democrat and Socialist politicians since 1961. 1961 was the last time they had a Republican Mayor.

Detroit has the highest poverty rate and social decay in the city is extremely evident. It is clear that Liberal Socialist Democrat ideas do not work, and Detroit is a prime example.

While one can blame the collapsed auto industry for the demise of Detroit, honestly one must also look at the reasons why businesses and families fled that city long ago. The "evidence shows that high taxes and spending are both a cause and consequence of urban decline."

The unions have also crippled business.
Enormous taxes chased out business and families.
Policies in the 1980's and 90's pushed people out of the city and into the suburbs.
Schools began to fail, producing citizens who comparatively are uneducated.

And this is what has resulted: the people are now wholly dependent on government and all they know and want is handouts.

Look at the recent response to "free money" from Obama (Rush Limbaugh aside) ....

These people think they are being helped in some way - and it is unfortunate that they do not understand that their carefully planned dependency is the reason why they are in need in the first place. They also do not see how they are being lied to and hoodwinked. They believe government will take care of their every need.

It is incredibly disturbing on so many levels.
I don't think this is the kind of thing that Dr. King had in mind for poor Americans - black or white.

Failed Socialist Democrat welfare entitlement policies have made people impoverished and ignorant and dependent. Unfortunately, these are exactly the kinds of voters that politicians, who can promise anything and everything to them, want. The problem is that this system is unsustainable, and wealth redistribution does not work - especially when those producing the wealth leave. When the "free money" is dispensed and spent - the people are still left in the same predicament that they were in before they received anything. Nothing changes.

Why the black community in particular isn't outraged at what they have been reduced to in Detroit, is beyond comprehension. Instead of demanding handouts, they ought to be voting every single politician out of office, and be shown the way to self sufficiency instead of dependency.

No where in the US is this more true than in the southeastern Appalachian coal country - in particular, southeastern Kentucky and areas of Virginia and West Virginia.

In the 1960s John Fetterman wrote an amazing book called "Stinking Creek", which details one community (Knox County) in SE Kentucky where welfare is the economic base. It's a very sad story about how Johnson's War on Poverty failed the mountain people.

I'm 100% against welfare programs - not because I don't want to help people, but because I have observed, first hand, that welfare programs do nothing to help, and only, as you say, leave people "in the same predicament that they were in before they received anything." There's no incentive to be self-sufficient. When Johnson gave the mountain folks welfare, he destroyed a whole way of life that was meager and difficult, but at least there was some dignity to it.
