The Republican American had a terrific article based on my testimony to the Insurance and Real Estate Committee on Tuesday 3/19/13.
Paul Hughes of the Rep-Am reported:
As more disturbing details about the deadly school shooting in Newtown continued to emerge, gun owner Judy Aron challenged state lawmakers Tuesday to demand state police disclose more about their investigation into the December massacre.
The West Hartford woman questioned how legislators could propose new gun laws in response to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School without more facts, including requiring gun owners to obtain liability insurance.
“You as legislators should have that information in hand. A preliminary report should be made available, and I am hearing bits and pieces of this case are beginning to leak out,” she said.
Aron referred to a column that appeared Sunday in the New York Daily News that provided fresh, morbid details of gunman Adam Lanza’s research into other mass shootings.
State police and Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III continued Tuesday to decline to release information about the investigation, and would not confirm the information in the column.
Columnist Mike Lupica quoted an anonymous law enforcement source who attended a conference last week where the commander of the Connecticut State Police made a presentation on the Sandy Hook investigation.
According to the column, Col. Danny R. Stebbins revealed that Lanza had compiled a spreadsheet that measured 7 feet long and 4 feet wide charting mass murders of the past. The document required a special printer to produce. The list also included attempted murders.
During a public hearing Tuesday on legislation that would require gun owners obtain liability insurance, Aron questioned why police are not giving the legislature the same information.
“Clearly there is information being made available and you as legislators should be screaming at the top of your lungs as to why you don’t have access to that information,” she said.
The Lupica column said the list that Lanza compiled names of around 500 people and included the number of victims killed in each incident and the make and model of the weapons that were used.
The law enforcement source told Lupica that Stebbins said investigators believe Lanza picked up from video games techniques for reloading the .223 Bushmaster AR-15 that he used and for moving from room to room.
Stebbins made the revelations during a seminar for the mid-year meeting of the International Association of Police Chiefs and Colonels in New Orleans last week.
State police will not be releasing any information on the Sandy Hook massacre until the investigation is concluded, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a department spokesman. He said the probe is still expected to take several months to complete.
State police will continue to provide regular updates on the investigation’s progress to families of the Sandy Hook victims, Vance said.
Lanza shot down 20 firstgraders and six staff members at Sandy Hook before he killed himself after law enforcement responded to the shooting. Before going to the school he murdered his mother at the home they shared .
Once state police conclude their investigation, Sedensky will then review the findings and issue a final report. It is unclear how long that might take.
Sedensky will determine if any criminal charges need to be filed based on the state police investigation. If there are any prosecutions, the final report could be held back until all the criminal cases are closed.
Vance said the leaking of the sensitive information that Stebbins shared with other law enforcement professionals last week was unfortunate.
“It is unfortunate that someone in attendance chose not to honor Col. Stebbins’ request to respect the families’ right to know specifics of the investigation first,” he said.
Despite this, state police will continue to share lessons learned from the mass shooting in such exclusive settings, including issues surrounding officer safety and public safety, Vance said.
He said this is a customary practice in law enforcement after crimes involving mass murder are committed
My testimony has created a ripple... and I am glad people are finally saying something!
Many are demanding that details be released NOW while legislation is being considered.
It is reprehensible that Second Amendment Rights are being trampled by proposed legislation, while the toxicology and police investigation reports are being withheld from the public and members of the General Assembly.
The people in control of the information of this investigation are hiding behind HIPAA laws - with regard to toxicology and mental health details of Adam Lanza and they are withholding vital information under the guise of being "sensitive to Newtown families".
Meanwhile the Rights of every citizen is at stake!
The Governor, and his anti-gun cophorts, would love to see these Draconian anti-gun laws be shoved down our throats knowing full well that the details of these investigations will prove that what he is pushing for in his anti-gun agenda would have had no effect whatsoever on how the crime of Dec 14th unfolded. It was in fact a carefully laid out pre-meditated plan devised by a very troubled individual.
